MBC's 'Married Woman Killer' faces casting backlash over Jung Jun-won's look vs. the webtoon's flower-boy lead

MBC released the first teaser for 유부녀 킬러 (Married Woman Killer) on July 9. The chatter wasn't really about the show itself—it was all about one casting choice.

Gong Hyo-jin plays Yoo Bo-na, a working mother who moonlights as a legendary sniper codenamed Kingfisher. The action-romance-comedy adapts a popular webtoon and airs Friday-Saturday. Jung Jun-won is Kwon Tae-sung, her husband. That's where things got messy.

In the webtoon, Kwon Tae-sung is a classic flower-boy: polished, mannered, the guy she falls for instantly. That first-sight moment anchors the whole story and shapes how the characters relate to each other. So when fans picture him, visuals aren't just window dressing—they're structural.

The split happened immediately. One side: Jung Jun-won's look "doesn't match the original's glamorous handsome image" and "the fit between the actor and the role is disappointing." The other: "Seeing it in the teaser, the gentle and affectionate atmosphere actually works" and "acting spectrum matters more than visuals."

Comparisons flew to Kim Go-eun's casting as Hong-seol in tvN's 치즈인더트랩 (Cheese in the Trap, 2016). That backlash was bad enough to coin 치어머니. The drama opened at 3.6% and peaked at 5.4%. Kim Go-eun's warm, grounded performance flipped the whole conversation.

Choo Young-woo hit a similar arc with the December film 오늘 밤, 세계에서 이 사랑이 사라진다 해도 (Even If This Love Disappears from the World Tonight). His sturdy build clashed with the original character's frail, terminally ill frame. The film drew 860,000 cumulative viewers and cleared its break-even point.

Jung Jun-won's known for realistic character work over flashy presence. Whether that's enough to clear the webtoon-adaptation wall is what 유부녀 킬러 has to prove.
