Netflix K-occult drama 'Donggung' drops July 17 with Nam Joo-hyuk, Noh Yoon-seo, Cho Seung-woo

Donggung hit Netflix globally on July 17. Eight episodes. One palace curse. A creative team that knows this territory.

Nam Joo-hyuk plays Gucheon, a man who can slip into the world of ghosts and fight them in the flesh. Noh Yoon-seo is Saenggang, an inspector court lady who hears ghost voices—and harbors secrets. Cho Seung-woo is the king, the one who sets it all in motion by calling both of them to investigate a curse festering in the East Palace (동궁).

The hook is brutal. Crown princes are dropping dead in succession, their deaths echoing a 30-year-old incident involving a pond ghost's curse. The king orders Saenggang to watch Gucheon, so their partnership starts as surveillance. When death creeps toward 영안군 (Yeongangun), Gucheon wraps cloth around himself and dives into the pond to reach the ghost world.

Two worlds, two looks. The real one bleeds blue and cool. The ghost world is red, desolate, crawling with vengeful spirits. Director Choi Jung-kyou, who helmed Devil Judge and Red Moon Blue Sun, explained the approach: "For the contrast between the two worlds, we differentiated the color tone and background." Action leans on VFX, camera work, and editing shifts, with Gucheon and Saenggang's interplay at the center.

Writers Kwon So-ra and Seo Jae-won (Bulgasal, Son: The Guest) pulled from Korean folklore and folk traditions. They picked ghosts with abilities that served the story and bent some lore to fit.

Nam Joo-hyuk said he "constantly imagined invisible ghosts and the unknown world of ghosts" and thought at every moment about how to convey it to viewers without a sense of alienation. Cho Seung-woo saw the king as layered: "It was not an easy task to put several layers of masks so that one cannot know what the king is thinking."

The supporting cast rounds out with Kwak Dong-yeon, Jang Young-nam, Tae In-ho, Hwang Young-hee, Hong Seo-jun, and Lee Hong-nae.
