BTS 'Arirang' comeback fuels listening party boom — 30.54M Weverse streams and counting

BTS's late-March comeback has become the engine behind a measurable surge in communal listening culture. The group racked up 30.54 million cumulative streams on Weverse's Listening Party service as of July.

Weverse Company launched its Listening Party feature in March last year, syncing with Melon, Apple Music, and Spotify to let fans share playlists in real-time. By Q2 this year, the service was averaging 8.75 million monthly streams. BTS led all artists on the platform. In the single month after their comeback, fans organized roughly 160 listening parties.

The offline appetite materialized on July 20. Around 30 ARMY members of various nationalities packed into Tilt, a music listening room tucked in a narrow alley in Donggyo-dong, Seoul. The 82.6㎡ space runs 12 speakers from floor to ceiling. CEO Kim Chang-hee told seated fans: "For precise listening, please refrain from making noise. Only 'internal dancing' is permitted." The session opened with track 1 of BTS's album Arirang — "Body to Body." Kim says 100 to 200 people visit Tilt daily across classical, jazz, and K-pop sessions.

The trend extends beyond BTS fandom. Arirang TV's I'm Live, which airs every Wednesday and seats audiences roughly one meter from performing artists (live sound delivered only through headsets), hit a competition rate of 146-to-1 this year. DJ Festival S20 (Songkran), live-streamed on Naver's Chzzk on the 11th and 12th, drew 7.94 million views. The World DJ Festival on the 13th and 14th of last month pulled 4.36 million.

Critic Lee Dae-hwa frames it as a "taste community" effect: as solo streaming became the norm, the experience of listening together gained value. Critic Kim Do-heon adds that artists need promotion for new releases while fans need confirmation of their own taste — a loop that keeps expanding the formats. (The listening room with a no-noise rule might be the most K-pop thing to happen this summer.)
