Kim Hyang-gi's 'Fly Up Butterfly' finally airs in Korea — 4 years after Taiwan broadcast, amid JTBC rehabilitation proceedings

Kim Hyang-gi's Fly Up Butterfly (날아올라라 나비) hits JTBC on September 19 at 10:40 PM—nearly four years after its Taiwan run.

Filming wrapped in 2022. The show aired on Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom that July through September. Korean viewers get it now, Saturdays at 10:40 PM and Sundays at 10:30 PM.

Hyang-gi plays Gi-ppeum, the salon's most senior intern. Timid, but more diligent than anyone else there. Choi Daniel is Gwang-su, a designer who trusts his own judgment. Oh Yoon-ah plays salon owner Michelle. Park Jung-woo is Mu-yeol, the youngest intern. Moon Tae-yu plays Woo-seon-saeng, a quiet late-bloomer. Kim Ga-hee is Su-ri, consistently kind. Shim Eun-woo rounds out the crew as Jen, a designer with an engineering background. Seven people. One salon. The first teaser already calls it "the universe's first hairdresser drama."

Park Yeon-seon wrote the script—she's behind Age of Youth and Romance of Their Own. Kim Da-ye (Hello Dracula) and Kim Bo-gyeong (When the Wind Blows, Mystic Pop-up Bar) direct. G&G Production and SLL produce.

The premiere arrives as JTBC faces a court crisis. Seoul Rehabilitation Court ruled on the 28th to end the network's autonomous restructuring and open formal rehabilitation proceedings. JTBC had filed for corporate rehabilitation in June. The court cited OTT expansion after COVID-19, climbing production and personnel costs, a shrinking broadcast ad market, massive Olympic broadcast rights payments, and a liquidity crunch across the Joong Ang Group.

The current management stays put. One catch: the court can replace leadership if their culpability becomes clear. Creditors submit lists by October 8. The claim reporting period closes November 6.

JTBC said it "will faithfully engage in the legal rehabilitation proceedings" and that management and employees "will make every effort to normalize operations through prompt sale."
