A Sungshin Women's University study of every K-pop idol group from 1996 to 2025 finds the average active lifespan is 4.12 years. Only 8 groups ever crossed 10 million cumulative album sales.

The average K-pop idol group lasts 4.12 years — 58.9% of the standard seven-year exclusive contract period. This comes from a comprehensive study of all 1,182 groups that debuted in the 30 years between H.O.T.'s 1996 debut and the end of 2025.
Kim Jung-seop, professor of Cultural Industry and Arts at Sungshin Women's University, led the research. It was published July 30 in the Journal of Korean Entertainment Industry (Vol. 20, No. 4). The methodology combined statistical analysis, cohort analysis, and expert in-depth interviews to map the industry's competitive structure.
Year three is the critical threshold. Only 55.03% of groups survive past their third year. That means roughly 45% exit the market before that point. The pipeline feeding this competition: an average of 39.4 debuts per year. Of those, 19.8 are boy groups and 19.6 are girl groups.
The gender gap in longevity is stark. Boy groups average 5.11 years of activity. Girl groups average 3.13 years. The difference: 1.98 years.
Commercial success is rarer. Of the 1,182 groups studied, just 42 (3.55%) achieved single-album sales of 300,000 copies — the study's break-even benchmark. Nineteen groups (1.61%) reached million-seller status. At the very top sit eight groups (0.68%) that surpassed 10 million cumulative album sales: BTS, Seventeen, Stray Kids, EXO, TWICE, NCT, Tomorrow X Together, and ENHYPEN.
Girl group RESCENE, from a mid-sized agency, recently climbed from around 900th place on the Melon chart to No. 1 with their title track. This happened two years after debut.
Kim flagged a structural concern: "Large agency idols generally show a trend of maintaining longer lifespans, which in turn raises the issue of reduced cultural diversity." He looked beyond the current moment. "Now is the time to prepare for the next 30 years of K-pop," he said, calling for a sustainable ecosystem rather than a single-success model. Experts cited in the study point to long-term artist development systems and shared infrastructure among agencies as the most urgent needs.
(BTS performed at the halftime show of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final on July 19 at New Jersey Stadium in New York — the kind of moment the study implicitly frames as the ceiling most groups will never approach.)
