Kim Yun-ah reveals why Jaurim hit '일탈' was banned from broadcast — EBS documentary airs Sept 20

The song that almost never aired

Kim Yun-ah has been making music for 29 years. On September 20 at 9:10 PM, EBS documentary series 시대목격 tells one of the most revealing chapters of her career.

The episode focuses on 일탈. The track is now one of Jaurim's signature songs, but it almost never aired. Originally planned as the title track for the band's first full-length album—with a music video already shot—it received a broadcast ineligibility judgment. In the documentary, Kim Yun-ah discusses the ban directly. She describes 일탈 as the only song she wrote by asking herself what story listeners actually wanted to hear, and what story would make them happy as a song.

From a blues OST to a music show top 3

Jaurim debuted in the late 1990s. Ballads and dance pop owned the Korean music market then. Their entry point was Hey, Hey, Hey, a blues track on the 꽃을 든 남자 film OST. Three months after debut, the band placed 3rd on music broadcast rankings. Kim Yun-ah has written and composed all of Jaurim's songs throughout that run. She works simultaneously as vocalist, producer, composer, and lyricist.

Bandmates have their own read on what drives her. Bassist Kim Jin-man called her "a person with conviction to create a better generation and a better world than herself." Guitarist Lee Sun-gyu was more direct: "She instinctively wants to give good things to future generations. It seems to be instinct."

What other artists say

The documentary also features reactions from fellow musicians. Singer-songwriter Lee Mu-jin described the feeling Jaurim's music gave him as "liberation." Musician Sunwoo Jung-a called it "reassuring," adding that it gives her "the desire to keep working for a long time—not even as an act of courage, but as something natural."

시대목격 airs September 20 at 9:10 PM on EBS.
