Kim Hong-gi told 33 industry speakers at Cannes Lions Seoul that K-pop's wins are built on probability, not luck.

Space Oddity CEO Kim Hong-gi spoke at Cine Cube Gwanghwamun in Seoul's Jongno-gu on September 18 for Cannes Lions Seoul 2026, the 31st edition of South Korea's largest creativity festival. His lecture: Learning from K-POP how to design luck.
The event brings major award-winning works and seminar content from the annual June festival in Cannes, France to Korean audiences. Thirty-three speakers from domestic and international brands and the advertising and creative industries participated this year.
Kim's argument was straightforward. He rejected the notion that K-pop's global success boils down to chance or a handful of breakout stars. That explanation, he said, misses the point.
"Luck is not made, but rather strongly cultivated to increase probability."
He positioned K-pop's industry infrastructure—not individual stardom—as the repeatable variable behind its commercial track record. (The argument lands differently when it comes from someone inside the machine rather than a business school case study.)
