Director Yeon Sang-ho on casting Bae Hyun-sung in 'Silnakwon': "Wanted to work with him since Hellbound 2"

A KakaoTalk script and a post-gym read

Director Yeon Sang-ho held a production press conference for his new film 실낙원 (Silnakwon) on September 18 at CGV Yongsan I'Park Mall in Seoul. Kim Hyun-joo and Bae Hyun-sung, the film's leads, were there.

The premise is simple and unsettling: a mother watches her son return alive nine years after he vanished in a camping school bus disappearance. Except he's unrecognizable. Kim Hyun-joo plays Ryu So-young, the mother reeling from her son's strange new face. Bae Hyun-sung plays Seon-woo, the returned son. It's a psychological mystery thriller built on that single rupture.

Yeon recruited Kim Hyun-joo in the most casual way possible. He sent her the script over KakaoTalk. No security documents. No formal pitch. She said she'd read it after the gym. Two or three hours later: "it's worth trying." That was it. "It was really made like a club activity," Yeon said, laughing.

Why Bae Hyun-sung, and why now

Bae's casting had two sources. He appeared in a single episode of Hellbound Season 2, and that brief collaboration left Yeon wanting more. The second reason was simpler: Yeon's daughter is a fan of Modular Family, the drama Bae appeared in. Yeon gave him the script. Bae accepted without hesitation.

Yeon was direct about what he expects from both performances. "This film reveals the true value of 'Kim Hyun-joo style acting' that she has built up over 30 years, and Bae Hyun-sung shows a completely different face from what he has shown so far." The tension between the two characters was the creative engine from the start. The dynamic between the mother and her two sons needed to carry "various tensions" rather than read as a straightforward story about motherhood.

Silnakwon received an official invitation to the Special Presentations section of the 51st Toronto International Film Festival. It opens nationwide in Korean theaters on October 21.
