IVE choreographer Shimizu breaks down each member's movement style after 5 years together
Shimizu, who has directed IVE's MV shoots and award show stages since the 'I AM' era, appeared on MBC's 'The Omniscient Viewpoint' on Oct. 10.

Shimizu on 5 years of IVE choreography
Shimizu has been shaping IVE's movement since LOVE DIVE. On the October 10 broadcast of MBC's The Omniscient Viewpoint, the choreographer broke down exactly how that relationship works, member by member.
The collaboration started with LOVE DIVE. During the I AM era, Shimizu went in person to give lessons, and the role expanded from there. "After that I took on directing music video shoots and award show stages exclusively." Five-plus years in, the read on each member is granular.
"Because we've worked together for a long time, I know well what choreography each member likes and dislikes, and each member's choreography characteristics," Shimizu said.
The member-by-member breakdown
Here's how Shimizu described the approach for each IVE member:
An Yu-jin — bold, open movements that match her outgoing personality.
Jang Won-young — makes every moment a killing scene through her own research. The same move lands completely differently when it's her turn.
Lee Seo — recently became an adult, so the focus now is drawing out a more mature feeling.
Rei — cuteness and sexiness coexist, so iconic movements get placed to play that contrast.
Liz — strong body line, so hip and head flicks are the go-to.
Gaeul — hip sensibility plus precise execution. The member Shimizu trusts to just handle it.
The Jang Won-young note is the one that's going to travel. Shimizu credited her specifically: "I think it's the result of her doing a lot of research on her own. Even with the same movement, when it's her turn, she brings it to life with a completely different feeling." That's a choreographer saying your fave does her homework.
The Gaeul read — reliable, precise, trusted — is the kind of quiet compliment that tends to get slept on in these roundups but says a lot about how a group actually functions in the rehearsal room.
