Chu Young-woo and Kim So-hyun Carry the Weight of a Director's Final Work

Mina Park·10/11/2026, 2:51:48 PM

ENA's Monday-Tuesday romance drama Doctor of Love (연애박사) is already drawing attention for reasons that go beyond its leads' chemistry — this is the final directorial work of the late director Ahn Pan-seok, whose name is synonymous with grounded, emotionally precise Korean drama. The show pairs Chu Young-woo and Kim So-hyun as Park Min-jae and Lim Yu-jin, two people whose lives keep colliding until the collisions start to mean something. Episodes 1 and 2 are out, episode 3 airs Monday at 10PM KST on ENA, and the behind-the-scenes stills the production just dropped make a strong case for why this one deserves your attention now.

Park Min-jae — the nerd lead with actual depth

Chu Young-woo plays Min-jae, a robotics PhD student who lost one leg to illness and had to abandon his dream of becoming a competitive swimmer. That backstory could easily tip into melodrama, but the show frames him as someone who found a second life in engineering — a little socially awkward, quietly warm, and carrying an anxiety about his health that he doesn't broadcast. The "nerd guy with hidden wounds" archetype is well-worn in K-drama, but the behind-the-scenes stills show Chu Young-woo holding the character's focus even between takes, which tracks with the production's note that his performance fills each scene with deliberate detail. Min-jae's slow thaw toward Yu-jin — the way his default detachment keeps slipping whenever she's around — is the emotional engine of the early episodes.

Lim Yu-jin — the one who moves first

Kim So-hyun's Yu-jin is a fashion design student on the edge of graduation with no clear direction, who stumbles into Min-jae's world and finds herself genuinely curious about mechanical engineering. She's the one who acts on her feelings first: episodes 1 and 2 close on Yu-jin kissing Min-jae without warning, a moment the show frames not as impulsive recklessness but as the first real signal that these two have already gotten under each other's skin. Kim So-hyun reportedly stayed in character between setups throughout filming, and the stills back that up — her eyes don't fully leave Yu-jin even off-camera. The character sits at the intersection of unfinished and determined, and that specific tension is what makes her compelling rather than just energetic.

The real-life distance that made the on-screen chemistry work

One of the more interesting behind-the-scenes details: Chu Young-woo and Kim So-hyun started filming using formal speech with each other (존댓말), the kind of careful politeness Koreans use with near-strangers. They only shifted to casual speech mid-production as they genuinely got closer. Kim So-hyun noted that she sometimes wished they'd just been friends from the start — but also that the gradual closing of distance between them in real life ended up mirroring exactly how Min-jae and Yu-jin move toward each other on screen. That's the kind of accidental alignment that you can't manufacture in post.

Carrying a director's last work

Both actors were working with director Ahn Pan-seok for the first time, and both have spoken about what that meant. Chu Young-woo said he was nervous from the moment he was cast and pushed himself harder on this project than on anything before it, not wanting to disappoint. Kim So-hyun said the experience reminded her why she loves acting — which, given that this is a director whose body of work spans some of Korean drama's most emotionally rigorous titles, is not a small thing to say. The weight of completing a final work is real, and the fact that both leads were aware of it from day one shows in how seriously the production takes its quieter moments.

Where to watch and what's next

Doctor of Love runs for 12 episodes, airing every Monday and Tuesday at 10PM KST on ENA. It's also streaming on KT Genie TV and Disney+. Episode 3 picks up directly from that unexpected kiss — Min-jae and Yu-jin's dynamic is about to shift, and given how carefully the first two episodes built toward that moment, the follow-through should be worth the watch. Screenwriter Min Hyo-jung and production by Studio Goti round out the creative team. If you've been sleeping on this one, the behind-the-scenes drop is a good entry point — it's the kind of show where knowing the actors took it seriously makes the viewing experience land differently.
