Free gimbap tastings at Suwon Convention Center this June
The Gyeonggi-mi Gimbap Festival runs June 13–14, 2026 at Suwon Convention Center Hall A — a weekend food event that's genuinely worth the day trip if you're in the Seoul metro area. Last year drew over 7,500 visitors, and this year 89 teams are competing with 30 advancing to the finals, all available to taste and buy on-site for free entry.
The setup is straightforward: walk in anytime between 11AM–5PM (current registration at the door works, but pre-registering at gimbapfesta.com speeds entry). The real draw is tasting 30 competing gimbap teams — each with their own regional spin — without paying admission. Expect lines at the popular stalls, especially mid-afternoon, so arriving right at 11AM gives you first pick before items sell out.

Beyond the competition, there's a kids' gimbap-making workshop called "Kkoma Gimbap House" (선착순, first-come basis — register immediately upon arrival if you're bringing children), a creator cooking class called "Suk's Kitchen" (check the official page for signup details), and a farmers' market popup called Doraemi Market featuring 41 farms selling Gyeonggi-do rice products and regional produce. On Sunday the 14th only, there's also a gimbap-and-tteokbokki special showcase, so if you're flexible, splitting your visit across both days means you see everything.

Practical notes: bring both cash and card for on-site purchases (some vendors may not accept digital payment). Parking exists but gets congested on weekend event days — the subway (Bundang Line, Suwon City Hall Station, walking distance) is your better bet. If you're going for the kids' workshops or cooking class, confirm the signup method on the official site before you arrive — the blogger's experience suggests this saves time and guarantees a spot.

This is a solid half-day or full-day outing if you're staying in the Suwon area or willing to make the 30-minute trip from central Seoul. It's free entry, the food is genuinely varied (regional gimbap styles from across Korea), and the market adds a local-food shopping angle. Not a K-pop venue or trendy café, but if you want to eat well and see a slice of Korean food culture in action, it's worth marking your calendar.
