Hello Kitty Island pop-up in Gangnam: Japan exclusives + Jeju-only merch
If you're a Sanrio collector flying into Seoul, the Hello Kitty Island pop-up at Shinsegae Gangnam is a hard stop — it's stocking Japan-exclusive items alongside limited Jeju-only designs you literally cannot find anywhere else. The pop-up runs through August 6, 2026, so if you're landing mid-trip, this is a real reason to cluster a Gangnam shopping day around it.
The setup is at Shinsegae Gangnam Central, 1st floor Open Stage Store — near Gangnam Station. The space itself is smaller than you'd expect given the hype, but it's packed with color: oversized Sanrio characters in wild outfits, sticker sets, quirky spoon-shaped squishies (function unclear, aesthetic undeniable), and the standout Jeju-exclusive line. The Jeju designs lean hard into island iconography — there's a haenyeo (women diver) Hello Kitty, a tanned/sunburned Kitty (yes, really), a Jeju stone guardian dol-harubang Kitty, and a tangerine-girl Kitty. Some are genuinely cute; others are weird in the way only Sanrio commits to. Twin Kitties and matching Mametchi designs are solid for friend sets.

Practical note: you cannot walk in and browse freely. Entry is tablet-based waiting-list registration on-site, then a KakaoTalk notification when your slot is ready — you have 10 minutes to enter after notification or you lose your spot. Re-entry is not allowed. On opening day (July 31), the wait was 2 hours 20 minutes, so go early if you can, or expect a significant queue mid-day. Some items are limited to 2 per person, so if there's a specific design, secure it early.

Hours are 10AM–10PM daily through August 6. This is a walk-in-only pop-up with no pre-booking option, so the waiting-list system is your only entry method. If you're visiting Gangnam anyway — shopping, eating in the area — it's worth timing a visit around a lower-traffic window (early morning or late evening). The merch quality is solid; you're getting actual Sanrio production, not cheap tie-in goods.

Who this is for: Sanrio devotees, Jeju souvenir hunters, anyone building a regional Kitty collection. Who to skip: if you're not a character collector and limited-edition scarcity doesn't move you, the small space and wait time won't feel worth it.
