Imsil Cheese Festival: autumn flowers, cheese pizza, and night fireworks

This is not a Seoul pop-up — it's a regional festival in Imsil County, North Jeolla Province, about 2.5 hours by bus or train from Seoul, but it's worth the trip if you're planning a longer Korea itinerary and want to escape the city. The Imsil N Cheese Festival runs October 8–11, 2026 (dates vary yearly around early-to-mid October) at Imsil Cheese Theme Park and surrounding village. It's Korea's biggest autumn cheese and flower festival, anchored by millions of chrysanthemums and roses blooming across a Swiss-inspired European-style park.

The park itself is the draw: rolling gardens, European architecture, and chrysanthemum fields designed for photos. Entrance is completely free — no reservation needed, no admission fee. You walk in, wander the flower gardens, watch the main stage performances and parades, and explore at your own pace. The vibe is leisurely and genuinely pretty; bring comfortable walking shoes because the grounds are sprawling with hills and garden paths.

The cheese experience is hands-on and affordable. There's a popular cheese and yogurt tasting station where you can sample local Imsil dairy products cheaply. The main draw is the rice-crust pizza-making workshop — you hand-roll the dough and load it with Imsil's natural cheese before it's fired. These workshops cost around 10,000–20,000 won and fill up, so arrive early or book ahead through the official festival website. Inside the park, Fromage Restaurant and a food-truck zone (Hwadeok Cook) serve cheese-heavy dishes: cheese donkatsu, cheese pizza, cheese tteokbokki. It's not fine dining, but it's designed for the festival crowd and uses local cheese throughout.

After sunset, the park transforms. European-style buildings light up with elaborate night illumination, and the festival closes with fireworks and a nighttime parade — this is when locals and day-trippers linger. If you're staying overnight, this is the experience to catch.

Getting there: From Seoul, take KTX or Mugunghwa train to Jeonju or Imsil Station, or catch an intercity or express bus to Imsil Bus Terminal. During festival dates, free shuttle buses run from Jeonju (Jeonju Civic Center, Jeonju City Hall, Hanok Village) directly to the festival grounds — this is a huge perk if you're basing yourself in Jeonju, which has way more accommodation and food options. From Imsil Station or Bus Terminal, local buses, taxis, or festival shuttles get you to the park in about 10 minutes. If driving, use Imsil IC off the Suncheon–Wanju Expressway; free large parking and temporary lots (Imsil Sports Park) operate during the festival, with shuttles running constantly.

Where to stay: Imsil has pensions and glamping near the theme park or around Okjeong Lake (scenic, nature-forward). But most overseas visitors base themselves in Jeonju (30–40 minutes away by car) — it has better hotel infrastructure, the famous Hanok Village, and restaurants. A one-night Jeonju stay + day trip to the festival is the most realistic itinerary for visitors from Seoul or international travelers.

Sample itinerary: Morning walk Okjeong Lake's suspension bridge and Bungeo Island Ecological Park (autumn mist + water views). Lunch on Imsil cheese pizza or local beef soup near the festival grounds or in town. Afternoon at the theme park — photograph the chrysanthemum gardens, do a cheese workshop if you booked it, shop the cheese pop-up stalls. Evening: watch the night illumination and fireworks, then head back to your accommodation.

Practical note: During the festival, Imsil dairy products get a 20% discount across the park — if you want to buy packaged cheese or yogurt to take home, this is the window. The festival draws crowds, especially on weekends, so go early or plan for waits at food stalls and workshops. Comfortable shoes are non-negotiable.
