Netflix's 'Cham Gyoyuk' hits #1 in non-English shows 3 days after global release

Netflix's Cham Gyoyuk (참교육) reached No. 1 in the non-English shows category on Netflix's official Top 10 chart just three days after its global premiere on June 5.

The 10-episode fantasy action series centers on a fictional government body called the 교권보호국 (Teacher Authority Protection Agency), created to restore collapsed teacher authority. Episodes tackle school violence, organized crime circles inside schools, youth drug use and gambling, parents filing malicious complaints against teachers, teacher exam fraud, and abuse of the juvenile delinquency system.

As of June 14, the series holds an 80% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. Forbes called it "one of the best dramas of the year," writing that it "touches viewers' hearts through victims' voices and angers them at the reality where justice is missing." Decider said it delivers "a weighty message about the collapsed educational field while also providing genre entertainment."

Back home, the response took a different shape. Both the Korean Teachers' Union (교총) and the Teachers' Labor Union (교사노조) issued formal statements saying "reality is more tragic than the drama" — an unusual move for those organizations.

Sociologists see the show's global traction as evidence of shared problems. Korea University sociology professor Kim Yun-tae said public education collapse and school crime are "universalized social issues not only in East Asia but also in Western countries like the US and Europe," with more severe outcomes in societies marked by steep inequality and rigid hierarchies. Korea National Open University media professor Lee Sung-min pointed to dangers facing youth—cyberbullying tied to SNS growth, drugs, violence—that "have already globalized beyond borders."

Critics do flag a tension. The show leans on extreme violence and legally impossible fixes (a military-background supervisor slapping students, private confinement of juveniles who can't be prosecuted) to generate genre satisfaction. Those methods wouldn't hold up in any real-world context.
