Musical 'Cruel Fairy Tale Survival' announces cast including Shin Ui-jeong, opens Sept 8

Shin Ui-jeong (신의정) is among the first names confirmed for 잔혹동화 생존기 (Cruel Fairy Tale Survival), a new original musical opening September 8 at TOM Theater 1 in Daehak-ro, Seoul.

New Production (뉴프로덕션) produces the show, which runs through November 29, 2026. Ticket reservations open in August.

Shin Ui-jeong plays Ae-rang (애랑), rotating with Ju Da-on and Seon Yu-ha. Kim Cho-ha, Gwak Na-yun, and Pyo Ba-ha share the role of Ong-nyeo (옹녀). Han Bo-ra, Shin Jin-gyeong, and Ryu Bi are cast as Eun-ae (은애). Seo Dong-jin, Kim I-dam, and Seon Han-guk split Prince Charming (프린스차밍). Park Se-hun and Choi Ban-seok alternate as Grimm (그림). Kim Hyeon-gi and Shin Jun-seok handle multi-character roles, including unnamed figures and key supporting parts.

Park Ye-rim (박예림) writes and directs. The creative team includes composer Maeng Jae-jun (맹재준), music director Min Hwal-ran (민활란), choreography director Lee Hyeon-jeong (이현정), costume designer Do-yeon (도연), and stage director Jin-won (진원).

Park's concept came from a childhood question while reading Sleeping Beauty: "수동적으로 구원받는 삶이 과연 우리에게 어떤 메시지를 줄 수 있는가" — what message does a life passively waiting to be saved actually give us. She describes it as a story of "solidarity and survival among the imperfect" (불완전한 이들의 연대와 생존). She hopes audiences worn down by everyday life can laugh freely with the honesty they've buried inside.
