Suncheon Filming Location: where Korean dramas actually film

Mina Park·6/3/2026, 1:26:19 PM·2

If you've watched a Korean period drama in the last decade, there's a solid chance you've seen this place. Suncheon Filming Location in Jeollanam-do is an open-air studio where productions shoot everything from historical palaces to village streets — and unlike a lot of Korean drama sets, this one stays standing year-round as a visitor attraction. It's not a museum with roped-off sets; you walk through actual reconstructed buildings and street layouts that were built for filming, which means the architecture reads authentic because it was designed to.

The site spans multiple zones — traditional hanok-style houses, market streets, and period architecture spread across the grounds. The draw for drama fans is obvious: you're literally standing in the spaces where your favorite scenes were shot. The layout lets you wander at your own pace, and there's something surreal about recognizing a building or alley from a drama you've watched. It's less crowded than Seoul-based attractions, which matters if you want actual photos without fifty people in the frame.

The vibe shifts depending on when you visit. Off-season (winter, early spring) is quieter but the grounds can feel sparse — some charm in that emptiness, honestly. Summer and autumn draw more visitors and occasionally active film crews, which is its own kind of energy if you're into behind-the-scenes glimpses. There's no single "best time," but go when you have a drama you genuinely want to trace through the location, not just for the sake of visiting a set.

Suncheon itself is a smaller city in South Jeolla, about 2 hours south of Seoul by train (KTX to Suncheon Station, then local transport to the site). The location isn't immediately walkable from the station, so plan transport ahead — taxis or a rental car make sense. The grounds are extensive enough that you'll spend 2-3 hours there easily, especially if you're stopping to film your own shots or just soaking in the architecture.

Bring comfortable shoes. The site is outdoors and the paths are uneven in places. There's a small information area, but signage for which dramas filmed in which zones is minimal — if you're serious about location-hunting, research the specific dramas beforehand or bring screenshots of scenes you want to match. The experience is richer when you know what you're looking at.

This is a pilgrimage spot for drama fans, not a theme park. You won't find cosplay opportunities or dramatic recreations — it's the real working studio left open to visitors. That's exactly what makes it worth the trip. You get the authenticity without the performance, which is rare.
