Seongsu's 1985 retro chicken-and-beer pop-up is adults-only nostalgia
Janghadda Harim Mexican is a Seoul pop-up that leans into 1980s market aesthetics hard — red plastic chairs, vintage signage, arcade games, a stationery shop stocked with old-school school supplies, and a full chicken-and-beer counter that's genuinely fun rather than Instagram-only. This is not a quick photo-op; it's a full evening out.
The pop-up runs May 15 through June 8 in Seongsu, about a 9-minute walk from Seongsu Station (Exit 4 is closest). The neighborhood itself is worth the detour — lots to see on the walk over. You'll need to pre-book via Naver Place (link below) or register for a wait on-site; opening is 3 PM daily, closing at 9 PM. Fair warning: this is 21+ only because the main draw is chicken paired with beer. You need a valid ID (physical or mobile ID card — phone screenshots don't count) to enter the dining area.

Once inside, you get a hand stamp for easy re-entry and a game coupon. The chicken pricing is the real hook: a fresh same-day-slaughtered whole chicken plus two cans of beer for 10,000 won. They sell only 100 whole birds per day, first-come, first-served. If you miss that, they offer chicken wing sets (half fried, half sauced) for 1,000 won each. Three sauce options sit at every table — original sweet, the classic 1985 recipe, and a spicy Vietnamese-chili blend. The chicken itself is domestic, chilled, and noticeably tender.

If you want to take it to the next level, add 3,000 won for their signature beer-holding container (a koozie designed to fit a 500ml can snugly). With that purchase, you get chicken plus beer plus container for 4,000 won total — genuinely good value for a pop-up.

Beyond the food: there's a game zone where you can play target-toss or ring-toss with your entry coupon. Prizes include sauces, instant noodles, or a chicken-shaped ice cream (which you eat with the 1985 sauce drizzled on top — it's weird and memorable). A retro photo zone with mirrors runs through the indoor space and actually photographs well. The outdoor photo area features a cute character mascot who occasionally appears for shots.

The pop-up shop stocks limited-edition goods: chicken keychains (harder to win than they look), beer glasses, can openers, cushions, sticker sets, and boxed instant noodles. Prices range from 1,440 won for ramen to 40,000 won for a golf ball set. If you're traveling with a dog, you can pre-book a pet-friendly slot and get free dog beer and pet-safe chicken; dogs also get a cute apron and hat.

Timing matters: the blogger visited at 3 PM (opening) on a weekday and had space to breathe. Weekends will draw crowds, so if you're planning a Saturday or Sunday visit, book ahead. The whole-chicken allocation (100 per day) will sell out faster on busy days. Plan to spend 1.5 to 2 hours if you're doing the full experience — games, food, photos, shopping.

This is the kind of pop-up that rewards showing up in person rather than just scrolling through photos. The retro concept actually lands, the food is solid, and there's enough to do that you won't feel rushed. If you're in Seoul through early June and want a genuinely fun evening that feels local and a bit off the usual tourist path, this is worth the trip to Seongsu.
