IU's new single hits #1 on four charts on release day

IU uploaded a behind-the-scenes production video for her new digital single 이 별로부터 (From This Star) to her YouTube channel on September 18. The single charted immediately: #1 on Melon HOT100's 30-day and 100-day charts, #1 on Genie TOP200, and #1 on the Bugs real-time chart. It landed at #2 on Melon TOP100.

She'd teased the era on Instagram the day before with just a photo and the caption "이 별로부터."

The bob she hasn't worn since Modern Times

The making film's standout moment came when IU got her hair cut into a blunt, layerless bob for the first time in a decade. "I wanted a bob that falls cleanly without layers," she said during the shoot. "Cutting it like this — without layers — I think it's been 10 years."

After the cut: "It's already light. Good."

When someone mentioned her short-hair eras tend to perform well, she nodded. "'폭싹 속았수다' turned out well and '팔레트' turned out well too. During Modern Times and '꽃갈피' my hair was also short."

(The haircut-to-hit pipeline is apparently a documented phenomenon at this point.)

Context: the July breakup

The single arrives roughly two months after IU and actor Lee Jong-suk announced their breakup on July 10 through their respective agencies. The two first worked together as MCs on SBS 인기가요 in 2012 and publicly confirmed their relationship in 2022. Both agencies said at the time that "the two decided to remain good colleagues."
