CU Convenience Stores Are Quietly Becoming Korea's Next Beauty Destination

Forget the idea that convenience store beauty means a dusty lip balm rack near the register. CU has been building out dedicated beauty zones across its locations, and the lineup has grown to over 60 brands and 130 products. The category breakdown inside these beauty-specific shelves covers skincare, makeup, cleansing, hair, and body, with testers available so you can actually try before you buy. BGF Retail's beauty team describes it as a small Olive Young living inside a convenience store, and that's not far off.

The brand that kicked off a lot of this conversation is Dinto, an indie beauty label whose color correctors and lip tints have hit the top spot in Olive Young's color makeup category. Dinto's new high-moisture lip balm — packaged with a Winnie the Pooh illustration — is a CU-exclusive collaboration, sold nowhere else. A special set including branded goods is also dropping this month. It's the kind of product designed to make someone go out of their way to find a specific CU location, which is exactly the point.

Another indie brand, Fiv, launched a CU-exclusive version of its Bubble Gloss in August — the same formula as the original, but repackaged with a hole punched through so it doubles as a keyring. Again, CU only. These aren't just smaller versions of existing products; they're genuinely different objects built around the channel.

The pricing logic is straightforward: reduce the volume, cut the VMD and promotional overhead, and keep the price under 10,000 won. Tony Moly's bestselling Mochi Toner, normally sold in a 500mL full-size, appears at CU in a 100mL travel-friendly version — carry-on compliant. Merrymond's Super Sharp Pen Eyeliner Pocket keeps the same volume as the original but uses a smaller container to bring the price down.

The growth numbers behind this shift are real. Color makeup sales at CU grew roughly 200% year-on-year, even though skincare still accounts for 43.2% of total beauty revenue versus color's 10.3%. BGF Retail's beauty team says Gen Z and Gen Alpha shoppers in their teens and twenties treat the convenience store as a weekly new-drop destination — a place to find something fun and affordable without the pressure of a full beauty retailer. CU's beauty-specialized stores surpassed 1,000 locations as of September, and the company's stated goal is to eventually bring a beauty zone to all of its roughly 18,000 stores nationwide.

There's also a real access argument here. Olive Young has around 1,300 stores and Daiso around 1,600 — both roughly one-tenth the size of CU's footprint. Outside of major metro areas, getting to either often means taking public transit. CU locations near schools in regional cities are already clocking notably high beauty sales among teenage shoppers. The convenience store isn't trying to replace Olive Young; it's reaching the customers Olive Young doesn't.

Brands that joined CU's shelves this year include Tony Moly, Manyo Factory, AHC, and Dashu, among others. The selection strategy leans toward labels with existing consumer recognition rather than unknown quantities — the goal is trust on a quick grab, not a discovery browse. One more angle worth noting: CU's beauty buyer points out that 70% of Nivea lip balm purchasers at CU are male, and the chain is actively expanding its men's grooming lineup on the back of that data. For shoppers who find a full beauty retailer environment a bit much, a convenience store run is a genuinely lower-stakes alternative.
