Balming Tiger's 'Gongbu' lands on NPR's best albums of 2026 so far, ranks 2nd on Billboard's K-pop list

Balming Tiger's second studio album Gongbu, released in May, landed on NPR Music's "Best Albums of the First Half of 2026" list and ranked 2nd on Billboard's "Best K-POP Albums of the First Half of 2026."

Billboard compared it to a contemporary art museum video art exhibition rather than a typical K-pop stage work, praising how it moves through folk, alternative pop, punk, rock, dance pop, and hip-hop while keeping Korean sensibility at the center. NPR Music called it "a work with sound that transcends language barriers and unique narrative."

The New York Times highlighted album track Keep On, describing Gongbu as a second album that freely mixes psychedelia, rap, pop, and Asian traditional music. The song itself captures "pleasant absurdity with rap and vocals harmonizing over a cheerful rhythm."

Clash Magazine gave it 9 out of 10. The Upcoming awarded a perfect 5 out of 5 stars, calling it a work that "consistently implements an original concept exploring human inner self and dreams." Alternative Press, Wonderland, The Greatest, and Huck also covered the release.

Gongbu centers on a fictional research institute called "Gongbu Korea" and explores human dreams and the unconscious. Sound design, visual identity, music videos, and live performance all feed into one worldview—psychedelic band sound layered over Korean and East Asian sensibilities. (The album title literally means "study" in Korean, which anchors the whole research-institute concept.)

Balming Tiger plans to continue meeting fans globally through various stages and content.
