Jo Byung-gyu confirms stage return in play 'Myeonhoe' as appellate hearing looms

Jo Byung-gyu, 30, is back on stage with Myeonhoe, running August 5 through September 27 at Hanseong Art Hall 2nd Theater in Jongno-gu, Seoul. The two-person production casts him opposite a female actor.

His last stage role was Island in 2024. Two years between performances. The comeback arrives amid school violence allegations still working through the courts.

An appellate hearing is set for August 28—three weeks into the play's opening run. Jo lost his first trial in September 2025 over a roughly 4-billion-won damages lawsuit against a person identified as A. The court found "it is difficult to determine that the post is false based solely on the evidence submitted by Jo Byung-gyu's side."

For the appeal, he's reduced his claim to approximately 900 million won. His former agency HB Entertainment is no longer listed as an appellant. The overlap between stage dates and court dates will be impossible to miss.
