Short-form virality is making K-drama supporting actors the main event

A character MV uploaded to YouTube on June 2 has 3.43 million views as of July 19. The actor behind it isn't even the lead.

Oh Jung-se plays Choi Sung-gon in the Netflix original series 참교육 (True Education). His in-character song 니가 좋아 (I Like You) has logged 1.13 million cumulative streams and 180,000 cumulative listeners on Melon. Those are not supporting-actor numbers by any traditional measure.

The pattern is everywhere right now. The Tving original 취사병 전설이 되다 (The Legend of the Cook) ended on June 16 and generated three separate viral moments from its supporting cast. Actor Jung Jae-sung's "Division Commander Fire Show" clip hit 6.33 million combined views across Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok as of July 15. Lee Sang-i's acting clip reached 5 million views. A music video featuring the fictional in-drama idol group "Miakak Boys" pulled 3 million views.

Over on SBS's Friday-Saturday drama 김부장 (Kim Bu-jang), director Lee Seung-young credited supporting actors Yoon Kyung-ho and Choi Dae-hun in a YouTube commentary video: "The goal was to maintain both heaviness and lightheartedness throughout the 10 episodes, and the two of them captured the tone and manner well."

Netflix's 참교육 also has actress Park Ji-yeon drawing attention for a single line of dialogue as the character "Ujin's Mom." One line. Viral. Supporting actor behavior.

Critic Jung Duk-hyun explains the shift: "A pattern has been established where viewers consume only specific characters and scenes through short-form videos or clips before watching the full work. Supporting actors who make a strong impression in a short time have a greater possibility of becoming the center of attention."

The industry is adjusting. One film director noted that casting decisions for supporting roles now factor in an actor's off-screen image — something previously reserved for leads — while flagging that rising appearance fees are becoming a real concern.

Film 와일드 씽 (Wild Thing), which also features supporting-cast talent drawing attention, arrives on Netflix on July 31.
