Jeon Chae-eun leads grief drama 'The Scene of Loss,' filming now in Jeju

Two sisters, one missing bracelet, a lot of guilt

Jeon Chae-eun (돌멩이, 2020) is taking on her first lead feature film role in a while. She plays Seong-gyeong in The Scene of Loss (상실의 장면), a drama about grief, guilt, and the objects the dead leave behind. Principal photography started October 1 in Jeju Island. The full cast was announced October 15.

The story centers on Eun-chae (Choi Ye-eun), who returns to her demolished hometown after her younger sister Chae-eun dies suddenly. She's searching for a missing bracelet among the belongings. There she meets Seong-gyeong, a high school student who spent Chae-eun's final hours with her. Both women then navigate their own guilt and the traces Chae-eun left behind.

Jeon's Seong-gyeong carries the weight of her younger sister's last promise, wandering through confusion and loss after a friend's absence. Choi's Eun-chae holds the film's emotional center through restraint—deep sorrow pressed down beneath a controlled surface. Newcomer Lee Tae-eun, who trained on the theater stage, plays Chae-eun, the younger sister whose death sets everything in motion.

The team behind it

Director An In-hae also wrote the screenplay. Her short film 엄마의 정원 won the Excellence Award at the 15th Chungmuro Short Film Festival. The Scene of Loss is her feature debut.

The film comes out of the Korean Academy of Film Arts' bachelor's feature film production system. That pipeline also produced the 23rd Busan International Film Festival selection 계절과 계절 사이, the Netflix title 가치캅시다, and the Wildflower Film Award winner 면접교섭. It's part of Sejong Special Self-Governing City's Regional Growth Talent Development (Anchor) Project. Co-producers include Sejong-based companies Hwaha, Yeoraite, Frontier, and Cinema House—all founded by university alumni—plus Daejeon production company Kuma Media.

Jeon Chae-eun debuted in 돌멩이 and has since worked across 그림자 아이, 악마판사 (Demonic Judge), 작은 아씨들 (Little Women), 삼식이 삼촌 (Uncle Samsik), and 내가 죽기 일주일 전 (A Week Before I Die). Her lead film 이상가족 was selected for the 27th Jeonju International Film Festival.

Choi Ye-eun previously appeared in 둠벙, which screened at the 28th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, and the Netflix series 정신병동에도 아침이 와요.

The Scene of Loss is scheduled for release in 2027.
