Shin Hae-chul: 12 years since Korea lost its 'Demon King' at 46
Twelve years after Shin Hae-chul's death on October 27, 2014, his legal case reshaped Korean medical law. This year, AI restored his voice for a tribute performance.

Korea's 'Demon King' debuted at 19 and never stopped talking back
Shin Hae-chul (신해철) died on October 27, 2014. He was 46, killed by hypoxic-ischemic brain damage that followed a cascade of surgical complications.
It started ten days earlier. On October 17, he underwent adhesiolysis surgery at a Seoul hospital. High fever came next, then chest and abdominal pain. By October 22 he collapsed from cardiac arrest and was rushed to Seoul Asan Hospital, where surgeons removed part of his small intestine and performed more adhesiolysis. Nothing worked.
His family sued. The operating surgeon faced charges for perforating both Shin's small intestine and pericardium, then failing to act. The Supreme Court handed down a one-year prison sentence in May 2023. But the real shift came two years before that verdict. In November 2016, a revised Medical Dispute Mediation Act took effect—officially called the Shin Hae-chul Law—designed to help medical accident victims get relief.
From Muhan Gwidо to N.EX.T to 'Ghost Station'
Shin debuted in 1988 at MBC's Daehakgayo Festival (대학가요제). He was part of Muhan Gwido (무한궤도) and won the grand prize with Geu Dae-ege (그대에게). Later he fronted the rock band N.EX.T, recording Sad Face, Don't (슬픈 표정 하지 말아요), Jazz Café (재즈 카페), City Person (도시인), and Dream of the Freshwater Eel (민물장어의 꿈). Starting in 2001 he worked as DJ on Ghost Station (고스트 스테이션), a radio show that became his platform for the kind of sharp, unfiltered commentary that earned him the nickname Mawang—Demon King.
President Lee Jae-myung called him "a symbolic figure who awakened 'the power to think' in young people and 'the courage to reflect' in the older generation."
His children sang his debut song—with his AI-restored voice
His daughter Shin Ha-yeon (신하연) and son Shin Dong-won (신동원) performed Geu Dae-ege with the band Lucy (루시) at MBC's 2025 Daehakgayo Festival — Light Up Youth (2025 대학가요제-청춘을 켜다). The festival had been dark for 13 years. An AI-reconstructed version of Shin Hae-chul's voice was woven into the performance.
