A2O LITE debuts with '니온,' hits Melon #1 in 29 hours on meme momentum
A2O LITE's debut single hit #1 on Melon within 29 hours, propelled by a viral mishearing of the chorus as '미혼 앤 비혼' instead of 'Neon and Beyond.'

A2O LITE arrives under Lee Soo-man's new label
A2O LITE dropped their debut digital single 니온 on November 13 at 6 PM under A2O Entertainment, the label led by SM Entertainment founder Lee Soo-man. By 11 PM the following night, it sat at #1 on Melon's Top 100. That's 29 hours from release to the top.
The climb came courtesy of a meme. The chorus—"Neon and Beyond"—got widely heard as "미혼 앤 비혼" (unmarried and non-married). The mishearing spread fast enough to pull the song to the top before the group had even finished their first full day as a signed act.
The meme-to-chart pipeline isn't new
A2O LITE is the latest to ride this wave. IOI's 갑자기 hit #1 on Melon on May 29 after the chorus "자려고 누웠는데 갑자기" got heard as "자려고 누웠는데 양의지"—a wordplay on Doosan Bears catcher Yang Ui-ji's cheering song. Yang Ui-ji then filmed content with IOI members Chungha and Jeon So-mi, extending the moment. NewJeans' "Hype Boy" followed a similar arc starting in late 2022 on short-form video platforms.
LISENE rode the "거제 야호!" meme to #1 on Melon in July 2024. Japanese member Minami had casually shouted the phrase after member Won-i warned her on YouTube that Geoje locals would scold her for her behavior. Melon searches for LISENE rose 6,550% after the clip circulated.
What critics are watching
Music critic Lim Hee-yun sees a structural shift: "It's not an era where everyone watches the same television program and viewership exceeds 50%. As cultural consumption becomes fragmented through algorithms, it becomes difficult to encompass everyone at once."
When a shared reference does break through, the effect multiplies. "When common playthings like '거제 야호!' or 'NewJeans' Hype Boy' are given, parodies and memes are mass-produced, creating a new trend again," she said.
The concern is what happens when labels start engineering that process. "From a producer's perspective, they must become a topic of conversation for music consumption to increase," Lim said. What begins as organic virality "could ultimately become a competition of spending marketing costs for content exposure."
(Whether 니온's meme was organic or seeded remains unclear—but 29 hours to #1 on Melon is the number either way.)
