Kim Gwang-jin drops 'FLY AWAY' on Nov 11, reveals wife Heo Seung-gyeong inspired classic hit '편지'
Kim Gwang-jin, 63, stopped by MBC's Omniscient Interfering View to talk about his November 11 single—and the real story behind his most famous ballad.

'FLY AWAY' lands November 11
Kim Gwang-jin has a new single coming November 11: FLY AWAY. He appeared on MBC variety show 전지적 참견 시점 (Omniscient Interfering View) on November 7, where he walked through his career and his wife, Heo Seung-gyeong.
His ballad 편지 (Letter) has a backstory most fans don't know. Heo Seung-gyeong is the actual subject. They met on a blind date. Kim described the moment he knew: he walked into a TV, cut his forehead, and she wiped the blood without flinching. "I fell for her completely," he said on the show.
Three campus festival wins and a 24-year-old collab
Early in his career, Kim won the Yonsei University campus song festival three times, beating out singer Kim Chang-gi each time. During a visit to Yonsei's Wonju campus, he spotted students busking and jumped in to perform 편지. Kim Young-woo of Sweet Sorrow, now a professor in Yonsei's Department of Contemporary Music, handled the accompaniment.
His catalog runs deeper than most fans realize. 오딧세이의 항해 (Odyssey's Voyage) came out 24 years ago. Kim Gwang-jin composed it. Heo Seung-gyeong wrote the lyrics. A collaboration that predates their public profile by decades.
The comeback pace and the reggae hair
Kim finished his entire debut schedule in a single month. He addressed it directly on the show. "If I had thought of it as work, I wouldn't have been able to do it," he said. "It's enjoyable when I think of it as eating delicious food together and visiting various places."
He also weighed in on his reggae hair concept. (His exact words: "Lady Gaga might contact me.")
Since the broadcast, Kim and Heo Seung-gyeong were invited to Seoul Fashion Week together. FLY AWAY releases November 11.
Cheer the story
