Shin Jang-mi drops ballad '하회' and pivots away from dance-track image
Shin Jang-mi released emotional ballad '하회(河回) - 그리움이 머무는 곳' on October 17. Her first live stage: SBS Life's The Trot Show, October 19.

Ballad drop, new direction
Shin Jang-mi (신장미) dropped 하회(河回) - 그리움이 머무는 곳 on October 17 at noon. A deliberate turn away from the upbeat dance tracks she's built her name on.
Korean-toned vocals sit over a grand string arrangement, building to an explosive vocal climax in the second half. The song lives in longing-and-loss territory: comfort for the pain of missing someone you love. The final chorus, described as a cry out to a river, is where all the emotional weight lands.
From dance floors to 불후의 명곡
Timing matters here. Shin Jang-mi recently appeared on KBS2's 불후의 명곡 (Immortal Songs), where her high notes — viewers called them "0.1-second stand-up" and "microphone earthquake" — got serious attention. The audience praised her composure after a fall mid-performance and pushed for her to sing more emotionally resonant material.
She told the composer exactly what she wanted:
"I asked for a song that makes my heart ache and tears fall as soon as I hear it — and I was surprised it was exactly what I wanted."
Finding that song left her "heart pounding and overflowing."
What's next
Her first live performance of 하회 lands on SBS Life's 더 트롯쇼 (The Trot Show) on October 19. Two days after release—before most listeners have looped the track more than a handful of times. High-stakes timing.
Shin Jang-mi has been clear about what this era needs to prove: recognition as a vocalist with emotional depth, not just a dance-track performer. "If someone is hurting from missing someone, I want to comfort their heart with this song," she said.
Cheer the story
